REVIEW: XENAI - PROJECT X

Updated: Dec 2, 2019

Rising hip-hop artist drop solid mixtape full of big ideas and bigger beats

The past few months have been busy for multi-instrumentalist, producer, rapper and hip-hop artists Xenai. After a series of singles being dropped individually, with accompanying videos, he surprisingly released his first mixtape.

Project X brings all the elements that have established Xenai is a promising artist on the local scene, an album that keeps you guessing as to what direction the next song will take, starting with the first track ‘Myst’ which catches you off guard from its first harmonies and unusual delivery of the singer.

Xenai throws in some bangers all through the 9-track mixtape, but not without peppering it with a tough of the unexpected and unusual

Xenai throws in some bangers all through the 9-track mixtape, but not without peppering it with a tough of the unexpected and unusual. From the soft and tender ‘Broken’ to the down and dirty of ‘FFF’, Xenai juggles the flow and emotions of each track pretty well.

By the time you get to the inexplicably catchy ‘Bounce’ you find yourself singing along before you even know it. And there’s even a welcome nod towards a more old school beat with the well-written ‘Affirmations’.

The mixtape seems to hold together really well, displaying the range of an artist discovering his voice and where he fits within an ever-changing hip-hop landscape.
